Nikon Prostaff Range Finder: A Big Win in a Small Package

We just got home from our first mini-cruise of the year; this one to the south sound area of Hartstine Island. It was a ‘win’ all around, but one of the stars of our reality was our super little Prostaff Range finder made by Nikon. This was a Christmas gift to Mike last year from my mother, but I may have had something to do with whispering in Santa mom’s ear that this would be a good addition to our small  tools aboard Galapagos.

This was our first trip of the season and we wanted to play with all of our new toys before we actually needed them so we made a little guessing game about distances over the water. You know what? What they say about distances over the water is true: it’s weird how much further away things are than you think they are. Really! It is so very true that Mike did a couple of tests of the validity of this unit by using the GPS aboard to measure distance, then using the range finder to see if the results were the same. And they were. I offered to use the 100ft tape measure we have to be double dog sure of its accuracy, but Mike just looked at me. I’m so analog to his digital sometimes.

Our first anchorage was Rosedale, close to Gig Harbor. Rosedale is a very protected anchorage and this is where you should go if you want to look at houses. Seriously. There isn’t a spec of shoreline to anchor off without a big honking house plopped down on it. So I hope they enjoyed the view of Galapagos for a couple of days. We like looking at houses, but we’re not really fans of being in people’s back yards. Still, we dropped the hook in quiet water, surrounded by private docks, and whipped out the little Prostaff just for fun. How far is that private dock from our private boat?

Sure, it’s obviously far enough. But how far is it, really? What’s your guess? That dock in the middle was our target.

The Prostaff is dead easy to use. Just hold it to your eye, put your target in the crosshairs, and push a little button on top of the unit. That’s all there is to it. Just one button. Just one push. Maybe two if you want to be extra sure. Compare this ease of use to the new automatic fog horn Mike just installed. It automatically blows the fog horn every set number of seconds, which is nice.  It came with our GPS unit. I made the mistake of asking how to use the foghorn function. Apparently it involves pushing a button a number of times, reading tiny print on the screen, and then doing some kind of heavy scrolling action down a menu written for ants. I don’t know. I fell asleep during the scrolling down part. I’ll need written instructions for that one. Good thing we have those little cans of fog horn noise on board, too. In a pinch, I can just reach for one of those.  Give me one button to push and I’ll push it. Just one.

Hold it to your eye. Site your target. Push one easy button. Read the number. Done.

The answer to our quiz? The closest private dock was 162 yards from our boat. Whaaattt? That was way further than we guessed. We double and triple checked, which is easy enough to do since you only have to PUSH ONE BUTTON! In the second photo of this post, that dock is our target and that dock is 162 yards from the boat. That is over 1.5 times the distance of the playing field in football.

Now, maybe you don’t want to spend the money on one of these little gizmos. No worries because we’ve got you covered with a cheap and easy old-school way to make one, which I just discovered while going through some of our old sailing books during this trip. In this case Crusing World’s Workbench:

After we got settled I plopped the dinghy into the water to dinghy out to this sailboat anchored at the other end of the bay. I thought I recognized her from when we were boat shopping years before and I was right. She is a beautiful Spencer 1330 named Athena. Had she been in our price range, she would have been a serious contender for us. She is absolutely beautiful and I’ll bet she sails like a dream.

Narrower of beam than our boat, and without the full keel, she still represents a seriously great blue water cruiser. And guess what! She is still for sale. I can’t imagine why, but she’s listed on Craigslist and Yachtworld.   She has almost everything Galapagos has, including a new Beta Marine engine, PLUS a double walled Airex hull, which I seriously wish we had. If you know someone in the market for a boat in this price range, turn them on to this boat. We took a good long look at her from the outside and took a number of photos. We liked what we saw. Just beautiful.

Juicy Projects

Close on the heels of our passionate dumpster-heaving, life-raft-engorging Valentine’s Day, Melissa and I spent Sunday showing our little Galapagos some love.

First on my project list was to install a battery monitor.  Galpagos has about 440 amp hours of AGM battery capacity but those batteries are really old. There was a current meter and shunt on the boat but with all of the other electrical projects I had disconnected those systems knowing that I would be upgrading soon. With Melissa’s insatiable lust for power, I need a system that can monitor the current draw from the soon to be installed refrigeration system, karaoke machine, disco ball and Lord knows what else.

I chose the Victron BMV 702 because of the glowing reviews in various cruising blogs. Chief among its advantages is a very simple plug and play connector between the meter and the shunt.  The 500 amp shunt also has an extra tap to allow you to measure either a second battery voltage (your start battery, for example) or measure the temperature of your battery.  If you don’t care about measuring a second battery, you can save yourself forty dollars and buy the BMV 700.

Since Galapagos had an existing shunt with two analog meters, I chose to use the existing holes.  As luck would have it the the Victron has a square face plate which did a pretty good job of hiding old scars.

Wiring in the new shunt was straight forward and allowed me to remove the old shunt and do a bit of cable cleanup.  It appeared to me that the old shunt was set up to measure all battery current, including the start battery.  The shunt itself looked like it had seen some high temperatures. After hooking the negative battery cables to the new shunt I simply connected the meter to the shunt using the provided cable with RJ11 connectors (Phone Jacks). The kit comes with about thirty feet of cable so you have some flexibility in where you place your meter.

Once there is power to the unit, setup can be as simple or as complex as you wish. In its simplest form, you can set the battery capacity and the unit will assume that the battery is fully charged. At that point, a running total is maintained of how many amp hours are available with loads subtracting from the total and charging current adding to it.  There are a number of tweaks that are available to allow you to trim the unit to fit your specific needs. Right now, I am ecstatic just to know that I can monitor my batteries without having to pull my meter out and dig around in the battery box to measure the voltage as a rough guide to capacity.

While I was rerouting the cables I noticed the lug for the start battery positive terminal seemed a little loose. One of the things I love about Galapagos is that she has a really comfortable engine room.  A fellow can sit in there and ponder life’s imponderables, far from the madding crowd,  giving himself the time and space to consider things like those loose terminal lugs.  Maybe even have a short nap on the subject.  I made a note to go back and tighten them but that would not be necessary. The stud bolt had separated from the lead clamp and just came away in my hand.

I could have looked at this clamp all day when the stud was sitting in the hole and never noticed that there was minimal contact between the battery and the cable.  A bouncy sea would have been all it took to create another trip to the engine room to start trouble shooting a mysterious, and probably intermittent engine problem. I love my engine room but all things in moderation.

So, with just one trip to the store for a new terminal lug, The Victron Battery Monitor is in.  I am looking forward to some quality on the hook time so that we can see how well our batteries are holding up.  I will save for another post my other electrical projects, but suffice to say, LED lghting and solar panels are involved. More juicy tidbits to come.

Alado Furler: Good Stuff for Good Old Boats

When we first bought Moonrise, she had hank on foresails. Hank on sails are simple  and very reliable but even with our Catalina 27 we had a few anxious moments when there was too much wind and sea motion to feel safe leaving the cockpit to wrestle down our big genoa. Therefore, a roller furler was practically the first thing I did to Moonrise to make her ours. Melissa and I both feel that this single piece of gear is one of the best investments we ever made.

When I was researching furling units I wanted a furler I could install myself but I was not too keen on ascending the mast. Many furling units require that someone go aloft and lower the forestay so that the foil and top swivel can be installed. I have climbing gear now and so ascending the mast is not such a scary proposition. But when we first bought the boat, all we had was a bosun’s chair and Melissa grinding away on a Barient 21 winch. I trust the woman with my life, but only figuratively and not while I’m dangling from a halyard of unknown age and condition.

So it was with some excitement that I began to research the Alado Furlers. Alado, a Brazilian company, doesn’t seem to have the same big marketing budgets as Harken or Pro Furl. They advertise in our favorite sailing magazine, Good Old Boat, so you may be forgiven if you have never heard of them. Alado builds their furlers out of aluminum and they are hell for stout. The foil is not some flimsy plastic extrusion; rather, they are beautiful, anodized aluminum interlocking extrusions that offer two feeders for sails. Yes, you can run two headsails in a dihedral formation from this furler.

What sealed the deal for me was that Practical Sailor reviewed a number of furling units and the Alado unit was favorably mentioned. If you already subscribe to Practical Sailor, you can read the article here.

Finally, the price of the Alado Furlers was well below the major brands in the U.S. In early 2009, I paid around $1400 for a somewhat over-sized unit. The same furler today is priced at $1720, still a very good value.

The installation process consists of installing the upper sheaves and the foil extrusions onto the forestay. The foil extrusions are five feet long and easily mate together so the entire foil is assembled on the deck and pushed up the forestay. A spare halyard is used to haul the foil up the stay using a rolling hitch. Care has to be taken that the foil pieces cannot slide off your forestay before installing the drum. These are beefy chunks of metal which act as a torque tube to the upper sheaves. Seeing one slip over the side of your boat would ruin your day.

After assembling and raising the foil sections, you must secure the mast using a spare halyard and then remove the forestay from the deck fitting. Now, Installation of the drum and delrin bearing is completed by sliding these pieces up the forestay and adjusting as necessary to allow for clearance of your anchor. After the forestay is re-attached and tensioned, the foil can be lowered onto the drum and tightened. Haul up your sail and go sailing! I estimate the total install time was about three hours by myself.

The only issue I have with the Alado design is how to handle the jib halyard. If you wish to keep a fully functioning halyard at the furler, you will have perhaps 50 feet of line that you must secure so that it does not interfere with the rest of your sailing activities. Rather than keep 50 feet of line, I cut the halyard short enough to tension the luff and tie it off. When I need to drop the sail, I tie on a spare sheet with a sheep’s bend and then bring the sail down. After I have finished my work on the sail, I haul it back up and retension as normal. As I mentioned earlier, Two sails can be hoisted simultaneously with the Alado. I don’t know what one would do with all the extra line that this would create if you wanted to maintain two fully functioning halyards. The use of small diameter, low stretch lines would probably be the best way to go.

The drum of the Alado units are larger than many of the drums I have seen from Harken and Profurl. This is extra weight, true, but it is also extra mechanical advantage when rolling up a big sail in a blow. We have had occasion to run our big genoa partially furled and, as you might expect, the sail shape is not so great. Still, it beats being severely overpowered or in danger of a broach.

Melissa and I have been more than pleased with the Alado and I would gladly buy another one for our next boat if it does not already have a furler. As we outfit our next boat for blue water, I want products that are this simple to install and maintain.
