Melissa Gets a Boat for Her Birthday

Melissa’s birthday was subdued this year by the fact that our son, Andrew, had his tonsils scooped out on Thursday. The surgery was a success and Andrew is recovering nicely, but as you might imagine, our attention was elsewhere.

By Saturday we were all ready to relax and celebrate by making Melissa wear an amusing hat while listening to our dirge-like rendition of Happy Birthday.

Melissa, wearing the traditional birthday sombrero of our people. Note how most photos of this woman seem to include a hammock.

My gift to Melissa this year was a watercolor of our Cal 34, Moonrise,  painted by Alex Kimball. We met Alex at a Puget Sound Cruising Club event a few months back and a mutual friend suggested that he might have time for this project. As you can see, Alex captured Moonrise beautifully.

Perhaps one of the reasons Alex was able to so faithfully render the Cal 34 is because as a young man he actually worked the at Cal/Jensen factory building these boats.  Spooky, huh?

In addition to the watercolor, Melissa got Jimmy Cornell’s World Voyage Planner [amazon_link id=”1408140292″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]World Voyage Planner[/amazon_link]

And one of our local favorites, the Waggoner Cruising Guide [amazon_link id=”1932310452″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Waggoner Cruising Guide 2012: The Complete Boating Reference[/amazon_link]

The World Voyage Planner is Jimmy Cornell’s latest work and looks to be a terrific addition to our sailing library. With just the one copy, I can see conflict brewing already.

Sailing Hiatus :(

We’re on a forced hiatus from sailing here at the Little Cunning Plan household. Our son, Andrew (age 20), had his tonsils removed, along with a couple of other minor surgical procedures, and we’re in hospital mode around here. Since there’s that nasty risk of post-operative bleeding, as well as the use of narcotics to control pain, we’re tied to the house for awhile until he is healed. That means no one gets to go down to either Moonrise or Danger Kitten. They sit at the marina, waiting for attention and probably feeling unloved. We could not plan our yearly sailing trip until this surgery was over so now we can tentatively plan to leave on August 24. Moonrise is still for sale, so who knows? Maybe we’ll take her off the market for a couple of weeks just so we can be sure to have a vacation.

So I don’t completely neglect this blog while Andrew is recovering, here are some photos from the garden this year. This is the year I have discovered that the gardens do, indeed, grow lustily without much help from me. The hydrangeas and lilies are in lovely form this year.

Intoxicating lilies. Their fragrance is positively thick in the evening.

The Hot Bed.

Little native ground orchid that volunteers in a few places. It's very subtle and my camera certainly doesn't do it justice.

Hydrangeas in full bloom.

Love this combination! Japanese Forest Grass: one of the best plants ever.

Japanese anemones. Exuberant but lovely.

Olympic Fever Sweeps Over Moonrise

Aside from parachuting monarchs, what has been your favorite Olympic event? Women’s Sailing? Yeah, us too. Melissa has been working feverishly on her form, hoping to win a berth at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Sadly, Paige placed 8th in the 2012 Laser Radial events. Melissa will see you Rio!

Melissa has been practicing her tacks, gibes and naps aboard Moonrise most of this summer.  Here is a rare glimpse of the athlete at practice. Notice the studied concentration. She is in the zone!

Feel the Burn! Focus! Execute! Win!

And be sure to wish Melissa a Happy Birthday (August 7th) as she embarks on her Olympic quest for gold.
